Copenhagen Day 3 - Ægir Day 0.4

Like most of the week, today started on too little sleep and far too early. I walked to the conference centre with Antoine, mostly along a dirt trail through woods and brush. I spent the better part of the morning working on uc_hosting, and trading cracks with Antoine and Adrian across the table. The HTML5 keynote was entertaining and informative, though I ended up listening to it out in the main hall while working.

Lunch was hot dogs. Boiled with bay leaves. Served with stale buns. I hope the Drupal Association is not paying too much for the food.

Two sessions for me today - both BoFs. The DrupalX10: Growing our Community BoF was distinctive for the fact that we weren't trying to spec out some new distrib or module, and for the fact that, for most of the BoF women outnumbered men (the only session I experienced that in all week). We talked about various training and community strategies, and I think I've got lots to bring back with me to Koumbit. Acquia's term for workers cultivating communities, by the way, is "gardening."

Antoine and Adrian presenting Ægir

The Ægir session went very well, with a pleased crowd and lots of interest. The subsequent BoF was about as crowded as was realistically possible. It was mostly an extended question period for the presentation, but I did get a chance to connect with some devs and get their help pushing the Ubercart integration forward.

Omar attended a highly entertaining session on group, the Drupal 7 descendant of Organic Groups. If you listen to one session from DrupalCon Copenhagen, make it this one - the guy got a standing ovation at the end of his session and was chosen as the overwhelming favourite presenter during the closing session.

There's really very little to say about the closing session. Mostly because I sat it out to hack. Omar will be able to give you guys a better overview.

We had a delicious Ægir supper at a chinese place right next to the after-hours coder's lounge. Supper conversation revolved around the food and various details of Aegir and future plans, with the guys trotting out some of their craziest ideas. It does seem that the managed Drupal market is getting a little more crowded, I learned that Pantheon had presented their own solution.

I spent the rest of the evening at the coder lounge, and I am pleased to announce that by the end of it I had brought uc_hosting to the point where I felt it is ready to support the Koumbit Beta and be contributed to the community. I have gotten a lot of interest in the thing during the Con and over e-mail, so I am hoping that putting it out there will help me rustle up some collaborators.

I finished the evening at the Foubar, where I did a little dancing. Omar and I smoked with a couple of Django developers who had crashed the party, and we shot the breeze for quite a while. Antoine was buried under an avalanche of beers bought by Ægir enthusiasts.

I left the guys at the bar, where to my knowledge they are still dancing up a storm and networking. Tomorrow is codesprint day and the sun is rising.
