Is there really a gap?

I am really happy to have brought back the gender debate in Koumbit. For me, it is an interesting question, which does not have a quick and easy remedy. In this three-page article I mostly tried to raise an issue. To ask a question, starting from a global problem and getting into local cases. I did not search to give answers, to offend somebody or to point out weak points. My aim was mainly to speak out about this problem.

The facts I used about Koumbit and Ile sans fil are not fake. There has been ethograpic analysis in 2006 going on for months in both organisations, and I based myself on the results from these. I did not try to give my own opinion, neither to use rumors or unprooved data. By my own experience, I know Koumbit is trying to keep an equality in its principles, conversations, and during meetings. I understand that these efforts have not much improved the situation in the past months.

It is not a fault of someone personally, and if you need to read more on the constructive side, you can start with the chapter on gender in "L'action communautaire québécoise à l'ère du numérique", where I have tried to give some new aspects and possible solutions there. If not, my master thesis will be looking more deeply into this question, namely the women in computer science and free software. Maybe I will have more conclusions in a couple of months.

I do consider Koumbit a welcoming place to work, and I would be happy if I have this chance one day. However, it is necessary to keep making efforts for giving more space to women who like to join in. If you feel there is a gap in Koumbit because of women's absence, positive discrimination (as sugested by Anne) sometimes work.
